A CARDIFF hotelier has taken inspiration from the characteristics of his favourite animal – to set up a chain of ethically sound hotels.

Jolyon Joseph – founder of Bar Cwtch and the Jolyon Boutique hotel in Cardiff Bay – is aiming to acquire a number of derelict properties and rebuild them to high environmental standards as part of his new Green Duck Hotel group.

The Green Duck Hotel Group will look to convert period properties into modern, up- market hotels, with retro and vintage twists, whilst adhering to the Carbon Trust standards by using specially sourced, sustainable building materials and environmental technologies.

All produce sold at the hotel will also be organic and locally sourced from suppliers across Wales.

Jolyon Joseph, director of The Green Duck Hotel Group commented: “I am delighted to announce the arrival of The Green Duck Hotel Group. Following the success of Jolyon’s Boutique Hotel and Bar Cwtch, this new venture is a natural step forward for me. I am passionate about cutting carbon emissions yet offering my guests extremely high standards of luxury. I want to be able to offer guilt free, lavish luxury! All produce sold in the hotels will also be sourced locally, similar to what we already do at Bar Cwtch and Jolyon’s Boutique Hotel." read more

Cardiff Council has promised a crackdown on illegal parking in the city from today, as it takes over responsibility for enforcing parking restrictions and deploys new civil parking enforcement officers to the streets.

The council says an overhaul of the parking enforcement system will create a city geared up for choosing sustainable travel alternatives alongside increased measures to keep the traffic flowing – as people will no longer be able to 'get away with' illegal parking.

Leader of the council Rodney Berman said he hoped residents will see a more responsive service targeting those abusing residents' parking schemes. He said:

"At the moment too many think 'I can just get away with parking here' no one will come and book me, but they can park there for ten minutes and hold all the traffic up. We need to get people thinking there's a risk I will get fined and therefore I won't do it."

In time people will see the service is getting better and responding to what they want."

Dr Haydn Mayo, managing partner, is thrilled to have the doors of the surgery back open.

He said: “We put a proposal together in August 2008 and got approval to go ahead in November that year, but unfortunately the recession hit. We finally started building in June last year and now we’re here, on time and on budget.
