Office Design Trend of the Month: Outside and Rooftop Space
Look outside your nearest window or door and what do you see? Many businesses are lucky enough to have their own outside space, but few utilise it to its best ability.
So, from rooftops to smoking areas, picnic tables to courtyards, we take a look at how large business premises owners are optimising their outside space as the first office design trend of the month for 2016:
From the Rockefeller Centre in New York to the Walkie Talkie in London, some of the world’s biggest and most famous buildings have roof gardens. Why? Well, the businesses that reside here recognise the need for outside space where staff can get a fresh breath of air and relax, but their premises simply don’t have any ground level outdoor areas due to the city centre locations.
Rooftop gardens solve this issue, as well as providing amazing views and plenty of privacy. Of course, safety is of paramount concern here, so always enlist the services of a trained designer. We offer industry leading accreditation and have an exceptional safety record, which means we take all the stress out of your office fit out! Last month’s Office Image trend was for onsite workplace gyms and we spoke about how this can improve both staff productivity and decrease the number of sick days taken.

However, if you don’t have the spare inside space for a gym, don’t worry. Why not take inspiration from some of the following companies?
Nike Headquarters in Oregon, USA takes outside sports facilities to the extreme. It has a running track, multiple sports pitches and even a lake on its property!
Whereas software company MINDBODY, based in California, USA, offers free onsite fitness classes, a professional nutrition program and monthly recess afternoons where the staff go outside for a sports day, Frisbee golf or relay race.
Rooftop Seating and Outside Dining Areas
For the short few weeks of sunshine we do have here in Britain, it is likely you and your staff will want to get outside and make the most of the warm weather. That’s where rooftop seating or outside dining areas come in handy.
Comfortable seating and sturdy tables are a must for productive, uninterrupted work, so why not invest in some quality outdoor furniture? You and your staff could take tablets or laptops outside to work in the fresh air and sunshine, or even enjoy a picnic style lunchbreak.
Google masters this outside dining experience throughout its many worldwide offices. Google in San Francisco makes the most of its views with balcony seating.
Whereas the London office has a huge wraparound roof space with picnic benches, relaxed seating and plenty of green space.
And for rainy days, Google London even has an indoor forest!
The possibilities are endless when you let your mind run wild with office design ideas. For more inspiration, take a look at a few of our other monthly design trends or arrange an initial meeting with one of our experienced designers by calling 02920 368585.
