Ecology is now becoming an essential part of life for many businesses so it is understandable that they want their office design to be green too. If you’d like to make your office or business premises more eco-friendly here are a few top tips to get you started:
Office design ideas don’t come better than this. Plants are the ideal functional decoration to make your office fresh and inviting.
Plants offer a cooling effect and can reduce the air temperature in offices by up to 10° thanks to the process of transpiration. This natural process also releases moisture which creates a humidity level within the human comfort range of 30% to 60%.
According to the Associated Landscape Contractors of America, if used correctly, plants can lower heating and cooling costs by as much as 20%. And the International Society of Arboriculture state that one tree has the same effect as ten air conditioners working 20 hours a day.
Here at Office Image we love using greenery in our designs. Why not stock up on potted plants for desks and reception areas, or even make a feature wall like in this picture?
Great coffee is a staple in any office and you don’t need to give it up in order to boost your green credentials. When you’re buying for the office make sure to choose fair-trade organic beans. This will have a lower impact on the environment and ensure coffee farmers are paid a decent wage. Plus it tastes amazing!
No office is ever the perfect temperature for the entire workforce so don’t stress too much about air-con or radiators. Instead invest your money in good natural insulation and open the window every now and again for fresh airflow. You’ll decrease your energy consumption without complaints.
Look around you right now, how many lights are on? Are there lights on in empty rooms? Then go turn them off! Incandescent lighting is particularly wasteful. 90% of its energy is given off as heat and only 10% is light, so by flicking that switch you can not only save waste but money too!
You may not even need the light on. Throw back the curtains and let natural light flood in. Or if it is a rather grey day opt for low wattage or energy efficient light sources. LEDs are great for this.
Many businesses have now made the switch from paper to digital filing, but you’d be surprised how much paper is still used and wasted on a weekly basis. It’s become habit for many of us to print things out thoughtlessly and where they aren’t necessarily needed. You don’t have to print paper handouts for a meeting, present documents on a big screen instead!
If you do have to print something out, reduce your consumption by reusing the paper wherever possible and write on the back of sheets or scribble at the bottom.
Why not ask your cleaners if they could use green products? This is a simple change to make and can have a big effect. Plus they often smell much nicer than the chemical-filled alternatives.
